Girl Crushes!

I just finished up a half page illustration for Chun Kim over at Girl's Life Magazine. It was for a cute article all about girl-crushes. (Girl crushes are sort of like bromance, except its all about being totally into another girl for her killer style/personality/ whatever) I sent over a couple different sketches trying to focus on the one girl really standing out among a crowd, or trying to convey the sense of attachment from the other girl. The locker sketch was just another one I did, trying to think of a different direction to take the image in, but ended up not sending it because I didn't think that it really conveyed anything about the article.
The only art direction after the sketch was picked was to make the girl behind the locker a little more feminine. I changed her wardrobe and added a few accessories, and voila! I like the way the final came out, and it felt good to have a decent amount of time to spend on an illustration, rather than some of the quick turnaround jobs I've been getting.

The Great Baltimore Burn!

I just did this poster for an even sponsored by the Baltimore Rowing Club. They wanted something that referenced the Great Baltimore Fire, and erging/ rowing. I was thinking about vintage sport posters while doing this, and I think the end result comes across pretty well.

Worst Day Ever

I participated in the 10 Paces sketch swap with current MICA students recently. These 10 paces projects always seem to end up happening at inopportune times for me, in this case, I was swamped with a variety of types of work, both illustrative and non, which left little room to get this done. I was trying to do something fun with the colors, but ended up getting completely frustrated, and was never able to get them how I wanted. They sort of look like vomit, unfortunately, and I really wish I had the time to actually get them where I wanted. Its a cute idea though. This was Lauren Lawler's interpretation of the Worst Day Ever, and my final from her sketch below.

Snake Pit

The Fruit Bowl

This piece was supposed to be a followup to the illustration I did of all that bread a year ago. (In keeping with the food pyramid theme) I actually had started this one pretty soon after finishing it, but got really hung up on figuring out the color and lighting. I kept putting it aside and coming back to it. Eventually it got to the point where I picked it up again and realized that I hated everything about it, and would have gone in and redrawn all the lines and started the color all over again. Its gotten so overworked, but I still wanted to post it because I like the idea in theory, and I spent so damn long wrestling with it.

You Must Be My Lucky Star

This was my piece for the Jackets & Sleeves show coming up at Atomic Books on October 7th.
We had a list of books and albums to choose from to recreate/ reenvision the cover for. I chose Madonna's self titled debut album. Every time I listen to it, I always get a super glitzy 80's over the top vibe from it Possibly because I always end up listening to Lucky Star way too much.

Little Dragon

I did another sketch swap with the fine folks over at Ten Paces. The theme was musician portraits, and I was given this sketch by Cam Floyd to work from.

It's Yukimi Nagano, singer for the band Little Dragon. I'm not too familiar with the group, but the music that I listened to seemed pretty cool. She is half Japanese, half Swedish-American, and I could NOT get her likeness down to save my life. I don't know if it was because of the angle of her head or what, but I tried my best..

Tipping Justice

This piece was for the Inlander out in Spokane, WA. It was for an article about how police are tipping justice in their favor. The art director pretty much already knew what he wanted to see... Justice larger, and a police man grabbing one of her scales and pulling it down towards him. I gave a couple different variations for sketches, but with something so specific, I feel like there's only so much you can do.

I did like where I was going with some of the colors and shadowing in the sketches. I've been trying to explore some new textures and ways of coloring things a bit, but didn't want to do anything too new or risky for a finished piece.

Bike Crash

Inspired by some...recent events. This pretty little lady is going to have a long recovery time..

This was a lot of fun to draw, and interesting to reference. (including making my roommate hoist my bike over his head for a while while I took some pictures) I've been meaning to try and work more on "action" shots, and I feel like this is a good start.A couple of the better crash sketches.. these were getting pretty close to what it ended up looking like.

Handsome Gents

Last week, I took part in the most recent Ten Paces and Draw sketch swap. The theme for the sketch was "Handsome Gents"

This was my take on it. I set out with some pretty high standards, and had a lot that I wanted to do with it as far as mood and atmosphere (and a background) but due to an unfortunately timed bike crash, I was pretty immobile leading up to when this was due, so I sort of had to rush to finish it. I feel bad because there are definitely some good parts, but a lot of it feels kind of half-assed. Maybe some day I'll go back in and make it so they aren't just floating around in space.

Anyways, 10 paces is a really neat blog and makes for some fun projects. Definitely check it out if you haven't already!

I was flipping through my sketchbook the other day, and came across this doodle of a girl sitting on a bed that I had done a while ago, and for whatever reason I decided to make it a bit more polished.

This was probably the fastest I've done an image like this in a long time. I finished it in two days, which, for personal work, is pretty rare for me. I also was trying out a different way to do shading and texture, and I think I'm liking where it is heading.

In case you didn't know, it is ungodly hot out lately, and I have been making and drinking Arnold Palmers like it is my job. Pretty much the best summer drink. Just thought I'd put that out there.

Onward Search

Its Memorial Day! Does everyone have their grilling hats on? There is a heat advisory here in Baltimore, and I am pretty stoked about it. All the fruity drinks and summertime activities I was thinking about while working on these drawings made me so ready for summer to happen.

I did this little logo thingy for the folks over at Onward Search, they were planning a summer rooftop party for their clients and contacts and wanted a fun "summery" logo to use for the invites.

We had initially settled on the sketches with the popsicles, but shortly after I got to work on it, it was decided to drop the popsicles and add in a DC skyline. I was really excited about the idea of a stack of delicious neon lime treats, but I think the image still works pretty well.

In the garden

I did this piece for an article in The Isthmus - a weekly newspaper up in Madison, WI. It was about gardening with your kids, and things you could do to get them involved with you and interested in gardening.

I only had a couple days to do this, and it was a lot of fun coming up with ideas. In the article there was a list of several different activity ideas, and I loved the one about creating a little fort/ hiding space out of those big climbing beanstalks.

My mom is getting remarried in June! Its cool/scary at the same time. This was for the invite.

I ended up procrastinating way too much on getting this done, so ended up having to rush to finish it in the end. I really wanted to hand draw some of the type that was going to go on it, but figured it was best to just get it out.

Mirror, Mirror

This was for an anthology of illustrations of Fairy Tales. I draw that stuff so often that I wanted to try to make it a less traditional version of something. It took me a while to even decide on which fairytale to choose, I was initially thinking of sticking away from the common mainstream ones and go with some sort of obscure folklore. But, decided that it would be more of an exciting challenge to take something that has been done to death and try to find a new way to represent it. (I guess thats sort of the whole point of making art, isn't it?)

I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, and I am really into the queen's crazy snake eyes.

Poison Ivy

Horror Film Festival

I recently finished up another poster for the Indiana Players. This time it was for a Horror Film Festival. They had a certain vision in mind, and had given me a pretty specific idea of what they wanted (sexy waitress holding a head, sitting on a counter with a specials board behind her) but other than that, I was pretty much free to do it however I wanted. I never say no to a chance to draw some pretty ladies, so I had a lot of fun with this one. I think at some point I will go back in and redo the type by hand and make it a little more clever/interesting.

The Burial Mound

I was in the Vinylmore III show at Atomic Pop this past month. I turned my munny into a burial mound, with a viking dude chilling with his gold hoard. Its been so long since I've actually had to mix paint, so I was having a lot of trouble with this at first, it took a while to get back into the groove of painting something by hand, but I really like the way this turned out. I wasn't expecting it to be so popular, but it ended up actually selling! A super pleasant surprise.

Unfortunately, I didn't think to do a very good job of documenting it this year, and the photos I did take are pretty terrible, so I'm borrowing these pictures from the Vinylmore flikr stream, which you can see here! (Definitely take the time to look at the other pieces in the show if you haven't already. So much good work this year. I was really happy to get the chance to be a part of it again.)

This was a poster I did for a small theater in Pennsylvania. I'm still working on trying to get better at hand lettering, and I unfortunately rushed a lot of the type on this, so it unfortunately got a little sloppy. This was a combination of couple different sketches I showed the director.

This was the original sketch, which I liked a lot better, but I suppose the final version is better for viewing the information.

I stopped in to visit Daniel Krall's fashion class the other day, and happened to catch him for his inking demo. Since he didn't have anything prepared, I volunteered one of my drawings. Its weird and also kinda cool seeing what someone else will do with your drawing.

The couple is an element of something that I'm working on. Hopefully I will get more of it done soon. I have hopes for it.
